-- "We, the undersigned jury, find the defendant guilty as charged and recommend the court to be lenient as possible." Such was the verdict of the jury which heard the evidence in the case against W. H. Eckler, a veteran of the Civil War who was on trial in Judge Nerlinger's court yesterday on a charge of keeping a disorderly house. Judge Nerlinger had set this morning for sentencing but deferred it until Monday at the request of Eckler's attorney in order that the defendant's son, who lives in Kalkaska, might reach the city.

-- Mary Ann Cotton, wife of David C. Cotton, died at their home in Grawn Monday afternoon from the efforts of an operation. She has been sick since summer and kept growing steadily worse until Monday when an operation was decided upon. She was 49 years old and leaves a husband and four children.

-- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Castenholtz of Grand Rapids, returned home today after spending a few days as guests of her father, Otto Thies. The couple made the trip to this city to visit relatives before going to St. Petersburg, Florida for the winter.

-- M. G. Gilbert, a rural mail carrier, was admitted to the Grand Traverse Hospital today. He is suffering with typhoid fever.

-- Mrs. Al Barnes, of Northport, is visiting friends in the city and her son Norman Barnes on the peninsula. She will be joined by her daughter, Mrs. Guy Ferguson of Harbor Springs next week.

-- Roy Dores left for Grand Rapids this morning to resume his engagement with the Gene Tracy Stock Company. The company will spend the rest of the winter in a trip through southern Illinois and Indiana, after their two weeks stay in Grand Rapids.

-- Ice is being harvested on Boardman Lake, the thickness being good, but the quality not as fine as last year. This condition is likely due to the amount of snowfall which covered the ice through the winter.

-- Traverse City Lodge No. 73, I. O. O. F. held a meeting at their hall last evening at which time the following officers were installed: Chief patriarch - Fred Erwins, High priest - John Haggard, Senior warden - J. W. Holton, Junior warden - Charles Barker, Financial scribe - William R. Korn, Recording scribe - John Coleman, Treasurer - Dan Eaton. Lon Fox pleased the members and their wives and friends by hitting the boards in a buck and wing dance which went far to show the agility of Mr. Fox and brought a generous amount of applause.

-- At present there are two vacancies in the Lewis Cass Debating Club caused by the resignations of Ralph Viskachil and Raymond Barnes. It is not likely that their chairs will be vacant long as there are a number of applications for membership awaiting action of the club.

-- Irvin Moran, who has been playing basketball with the S. A. S. team of the Catholic high school entered the high school this morning. He will be out for the team and his presence should materially strengthen it.

-- Having interested Detroit capital in the manufacture of his patent printers' galley, W. H. Schuyler will move the Schuyler linotype repair works to that city just as soon as the machinery can be packed. He has secured a very desirable location on Jefferson Avenue.

-- Sheriff F. L. Shuter brought Philip Young back from Williamsburg today and took him before Justice George W. Curtis, Young having been arrested, charged with wife desertion. The parties tell conflicting stories and Justice Curtis adjourned the case until Thursday in order that he might have time to look the matter up.

-- Advice on deportment. Spitting, smoking, chewing, or biting fingernails is improper of a lady or a gentleman.

-- Medical advice of a century ago. Not only is pure air necessary but all sources of contamination must be cut off.
