TC Breakers excel at Washout

Hayley Shugart and Katlyn Myers survived the 1000-yard freestyle and their Traverse City Breakers teammates continued to excel at the East Grand Rapids Winter Washout swim meet.

The three-day meet brought together more than 600 swimmers from 31 clubs in Michigan.

Shugart and Myers swam the grueling 1000 freestyle for the first time. Shugart, 16, placed 13th in the women's open division with a time of 13 minutes, 4.36 seconds. Myers, 13, finished fifth in the 13-14 group (14:04.51).

In the boys 8 and under division, Kyle Skarshaug scored a second place finish in the 100 individual medley-C (1:55.61). His time in that event was a personal best. Skarshaug added a third in the 25 breaststroke (29.75) and fourths in the 25 freestyle (19.65) and 50 freestyle (44.47).

On the girls side of that group, Kristen Myers, 8, notched personal best times in the 25 freestyle (22.64) and 25 backstroke (27.60) while sister Morgan Myers did the same in the 25 freestyle (22.76).

In the girls 9-10 division, the foursome of Jenna Ashley, Natalia Chela, Julia Brunner and Paige Carrigan qualified for the state championships in the 200 medley relay by swimming that event in 2:33.86. Individually, Brunner finished second in the high point standings in that group despite swimming in just six of the nine possible events during the meet.

Brunner, 10, won the 100 butterfly (1:11.69), finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:16.03) and placed in the top five in her other four events.

Ashley touched the wall second in the 100 butterfly-C (1:35.02) and added a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:33.93). Both efforts were Junior Olympic qualifying cuts.

Carrigan, 9, set personal records in the 50 backstroke (43.07) and 50 freestyle (34.93) among her four events. Chela, 9, did the same in the 500 freestyle (8:03.40) on Friday night, good for second place in that event.

Natalie Wagner, 10, registered personal bests in all four of her events, highlighted by her second place finish in the 50 breaststroke-C (47.17).

Brook Prohaska qualified for the Junior Olympics in the 11-12 age group by placing fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:46.53). Prohaska had top 10 finishes in the 50 breaststroke (8th, 40.43) and 100 breaststroke (10th, 1:28.45) during the meet.

Teammate Bryn Davis, 11, piled up personal records in seven of eight events. Her eighth place time in the 100 freestyle (1:13.44) was her best ever by almost 30 seconds.

Maegan Kornexl raced to a fifth place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:35.40) and a sixth in the 50 butterfly (41.10) in the 11-12 division. Emma Simon stopped the clock eighth in the 50 freestyle (35.15), while Maddy Zimmerman scored a 14th in the 100 freestyle (1:17.15).

Emily Huhman's time (1:18.26) in the 100 freestyle was her best ever. Brenna Argue posted a personal best (1:21.54) in that same event. She added a sixth place finish in the 50 breaststroke-C (45.94).

Emily Jameson, 12, won the 50 breaststroke-B (38.99) and closed in on the one minute barrier (1:00.21) in the 100 freestyle. Jameson registered top 10 finishes in four other events.

In the boys 11-12 division, Mitch Clark touched seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.91), ninth in the 50 breaststroke (40.76) and ninth in the 50 freestyle (31.72).

Traverse City's 13-14 girls group swam well during the meet. Katy Zimmerman finished fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:12.18) and 200 freestyle (2:38.10) in personal best times.

Alaina Chela captured the 400 individual medley-C (5:12.37) and placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.97). Becky Stanwick had top 10 finishes in all four of her events. Her time (1:13.32) in the 100 freestyle was a personal best.

Luke Balestrero, 14, dropped below 26 seconds for the first time in the 50 freestyle (25.88) in the boys 13-14 division.

Kyle Shomin and Jacob Russell continued their season-long improvement in the men's open division. Shomin, 16, raced to a third place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:16.67) and a fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.05) and 200 freestyle (1:54.67). Russell, 15, finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.19), sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.89) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (59.90).
