Several readers responded to a request for information on the Traverse Area Historical Society archive photo that appeared in the Oct. 21 Community section. The photo was of a group of young football players.
Readers identified the young pigskin players in the front row, left to right, as Ray Barley, Jim Warner, Paul VanColen, Bill Jerome (holding football), Lee Steed, Don Dockery and Ron Hensel. Back row, left to right: Ron Weiss, Bill Martin, Bob Bathke, Doug Slack, Ted Wilcox, Joe Simonee, unknown, Coach Vic Peterson and Joe Tompkins.
Bob Bathke e-mailed that the players belonged to the 1950 Central Grade School football team, comprised of six and seventh graders. He said the team was the runner-up champs in the city league. Bathke noted that the other teams were Boardman (champion), Oak, Elmwood and Union.
