Many readers responded to a request for information on the Traverse Area Historical Society archive photo that ran Nov. 5 in the Community section. The photo was of a group of women bowlers at an unidentified bowling alley.
Traverse City resident Mike Lewis was among the dozen or more readers who noted that Conway's bowling alley was located on Park Street between the alley and Front Street.
Several others felt the photograph was taken inside the Traverse City Recreation bowling alley, where Front Row Center is today at 121 Front St.
Dwight Brown, of Traverse City, said he could identify Traverse City Recreation bowling alley because of the stairs in the left of the photograph. He noted that the bowling operation later moved to Woodmere Avenue and became J and G Lanes. As for the Conway bowling alley, Brown said he purchased all nine lanes for $45 in 1965 or '66. The former school teacher said he used the wood to make workbenches.
