-- Burleigh Fletcher, a former resident of Traverse City, died Saturday at Thompsonville from injuries which he received in falling from a sleigh, dying a few minutes after he fell. He was 40 years old. The remains were brought to this city and funeral services were held Tuesday at the Carter Undertaking Parlors.

-- Fifty years of wedded life have set lightly upon Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Stiger, whose golden wedding anniversary was celebrated Monday night at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Cora Bowhall on East Front Street. It was hard to believe that this young looking couple were celebrating their golden wedding, for neither bride nor groom looked to be past 50.

-- A week ago Wednesday a company of friends and neighbors met at the home of John Anderson in Grawn to help him celebrate his sixtieth birthday. The evening was pleasantly spent in music followed by refreshments consisting of chicken sandwiches, pickles, coffee, ice cream, assorted cakes, oranges, bananas and candies. Mr. Anderson was presented with a handsome chair.

-- John Mill is trimming Mr. Golden's old orchard at Ogdensburg. A number of trees are being cut down and also a good pruning to what is left.

-- Angus Griffith lost his house at Wexford Center and nearly all the contents by fire last Tuesday. Mrs. Griffith was alone and could save but a few things. Relatives who live nearby have taken them in until other housing can be found and community residents are collecting money, clothing and home furnishings to aid the couple.

-- The eleventh annual banquet of the Needham Business College was held last evening and was one of the most pleasant of any of the banquets given by the college. Fully 225 people were in attendance. Hon. W. H. Umlor spoke on the subject, "Be Dependable" followed by Dr. H. B. Garner, who recalled the many things that have advanced education in the last quarter century, the most important being enforcement of the truant laws.

-- Howard Morgan, Roma Evans and Gene Hartough, were in an ice boat Friday which struck an air hole throwing them out and only luck prevented the accident from turning into a tragedy. The boat stopped as though it had struck a stone wall tipping the cockpit so as to throw Morgan half in the water. He managed to struggle out and rescue both Evans and Hartough.

-- James Nelson was arrested last night upon a complaint of his wife Mary Nelson, the warrant charging him with deserting and abandoning his wife and two minor children. He was taken before Judge Marlinger with his examination being set for next Wednesday. Under the statute of 1907, wife abandonment is made a felony punishable upon conviction by imprisonment in the state's prison for not more than three years nor less than one year.

-- Miss Orrine Wood and a boy by the name of Edwards, both from Atwood, were in the city Friday on their way to Ann Arbor to take the Pasteur treatment, having been bitten by a mad dog on Tuesday. Miss Wood, who is only 13 years old, was standing in the barnyard at her mother's home when the dog came up to her and sprang at her face. She had a pitchfork in her hands and standing there alone, kept striking the maddened brute, keeping it away from her until she could get into the house.

-- Residents of East Eighth Street were surprised yesterday at the sight of a hen perched upon a milk wagon which was on its way delivering milk. The hen had evidently perched herself upon the wagon over night and the driver had failed to see her when he started out in the early morning. The hen being stiff with the cold made no attempt to fly away and huddled herself in a heap being contented to let things take its course.

-- Ralph Thompson was instantly killed by Pere Marquette train No. 5 near Casnovia Friday night and his son, Joseph was so badly injured the he died early this morning. The men were driving over the crossing and failed to hear or see the train. The three horses the men had were killed. A physician on the train gave what assistance he could and accompanied the injured to Casnovia.

-- Advice on deportment. When traveling, a gentleman may offer to escort a lady to the refreshment saloon.

-- Medical advice of a century ago. To shorten a convulsion with a child, place him at once in a warm bath and apply a cloth wrung out of cold water to the head.

-- Best buy of the week. Ladies' Fleece Lined Hosiery, 8 cents a pair at Hamilton Clothing Co.
