Several readers ID hockey players
Several readers wrote in response to the photo of hockey players at a Traverse City rink submitted by Les McCain III. The photo ran in the Community section on Aug. 20. It can be viewed at gtherald.com/historicalphotos.
-- Terry Carpenter of Traverse City named seven of the players in the photograph. In the back row, left to right: first player, Dick Ballentine; third player in, Dave Erickson; Bauer boy (with the "A" on his jersey). Front row, left to right: first player, George Lardie; second player in, Dick Johnson; fourth player in, "Bing" Stricker; and front row, far right Clayton Sporre (coach).
-- Readers Valerie Fewins, Dan Stricker and Gail Rokos all wrote in to identify Julius (Sonny) Stricker as the dark-haired player in the front row, third from the right.
-- Reader Lu Johnson identified three players in the photograph. "Second from left, bottom row is goalie Dick Johnson. Second from left, top row is Neil Overholt. Middle of top row is Buster Round."
-- Reader Janet Send named all 13 men pictured in the photograph. She noted that the photo of the Traverse City Penguins hockey team was taken in either 1951 or 1952. She says her husband, Vernon Send played on the team. Penguin team members, front row, left to right: George Lardie, Dick Johnson, Vernon Send, Julius Stricker, Les McCain and Coach Clayton Sporre. Back row, left to right: Dick Ballentine, Neil Overholt, Dave Erickson, Bob Dohm, Hollis Brown, Bob Bauer, and Bill Green. Missing from the photo that day were players Art Secore (goalie) and Ed Secore (defenseman).
