November 18, 2009 12:00 am Judy Weber responded to a request for information on the Traverse Area Historical Society archive photo that appeared in the Nov. 11 Community section. The photograph was of a man standing in a store near a selection of sporting goods. Weber identified the man as her great-uncle, Martin Winnie. She said the photo was probably taken at McFarland Sporting Goods in Traverse City. Her great-uncle worked there as a salesman until he retired. She also noted that Winnie was an avid fly fisherman who spent countless hours fishing the Boardman River. --- John Travis also recognized Martin Winnie as a popular salesman working for Hamilton Clothing Co. in Traverse City. "He and his brother Art Winnie were well-known experts in fly fishing and fly tying," Travis said in an e-mail. "I worked at Hamilton's in the mid-'40s and recall Mr. Winnie talking with his many friends about times spent on the Boardman River." Traverse Area Historical Society archive photos that appear in the Community section can be found online at www.gtherald.com/history.
