Readers ID sporting goods salesman

Judy Weber responded to a request for information on the Traverse Area Historical Society archive photo that appeared in the Nov. 11 Community section. The photograph was of a man standing in a store near a selection of sporting goods.

Weber identified the man as her great-uncle, Martin Winnie. She said the photo was probably taken at McFarland Sporting Goods in Traverse City. Her great-uncle worked there as a salesman until he retired. She also noted that Winnie was an avid fly fisherman who spent countless hours fishing the Boardman River.

John Travis also recognized Martin Winnie as a popular salesman working for Hamilton Clothing Co. in Traverse City. "He and his brother Art Winnie were well-known experts in fly fishing and fly tying," Travis said in an e-mail. "I worked at Hamilton's in the mid-'40s and recall Mr. Winnie talking with his many friends about times spent on the Boardman River."
