Retired UAW workers plan lunch
traverse city -- The Michigan NW Lower Peninsula UAW Retirees will meet for lunch at noon, Thursday at 757 E. Silver Lake Road. For reservations, call 943-9611 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday. Lunch is $3. Canned goods will be accepted for the Salvation Army and donations will be taken for Toys for Tots and homeless teenagers.
All books a dollar at sale
TRAVERSE CITY -- Alpha Rho Pi, Northwestern Michigan College's chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa, will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the Welcome Center in the Health and Science Building on NMC's main campus.
All books will be sold for $1. Textbooks, novels, fiction and non-fiction are available. Books that are not sold will be donated to charity.
Be a 'good neighbor' and give a sweater
Mount Pleasant -- WCMU is asking area residents to pay tribute to the legacy of Fred Rogers and participate in the third annual "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive."
New or gently-worn sweaters will be accepted through Dec. 18 at the following locations: Gaylord, Glen's Markets and Jay's Sporting Goods. Harbor Springs, The Manna Food Project and Woolly Bugger Coffee Shop. Petoskey, Petoskey Public Library, Oleson's Food Stores, Crooked Tree Arts Center and Grain Train Natural Food Co-op. Traverse City, Great Lakes Children's Museum, Trains and Things Hobbies, Bay Area Urology Associates, and Oleson's Plaza East and West.

Foundation awards grants
CHARLEVOIX -- The Charlevoix County Community Foundation awarded $555,075 in grants, including money to Bellaire Public Schools for a journalism yearbook workshop.
Other projects included senior housing on Beaver Island, adaptive ski equipment for Challenge Mountain and Saturday Science programs at East Jordan's Raven Hill Discovery Center.
The latest round of awards brings the foundation's grantmaking total to almost $12 million over 17 years.
