TRAVERSE CITY -- Cupid goes caroling this Valentine's Day.
Several area musical groups are selling singing valentines to celebrate the hearty holiday. The men of Cherry Capital Chorus, the women of Grand Traverse Chorus of Sweet Adelines International and the Traverse City Central High School students who make up the Choral-Aires all will sing until your sweetheart swoons.
"It's great fun because everyone so enjoys the surprise of being serenaded," said Jeffrey Cobb, Cherry Capital Chorus director.
His group will divide into quartets and a few octets to deliver singing valentines in the Grand Traverse County region for $45 on Friday or Saturday. The package comes with a flower, picture, card and two love songs. This year, nearly 40 chorus members are participating and each quartet has its own repertoire including favorites such as "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and "I Love You Truly." Visit the chorus Web site at www.cherrycapitalchorus.org to schedule a valentine.
Quartets of Sweet Adelines will sing and give out local chocolates with a photo and card for $40. Members will deliver on Friday or Saturday. Spokeswoman and valentine singer Carly McCall has crooned in dentist offices, restaurants and a bowling alley, among many other spots. One quartet traveled as far north as Petoskey.
"You get to go (to) a lot of fun places. It's like delivering Christmas presents. No one's ever grumpy," McCall said.
To order songs from the Sweet Adelines, call (231) 357-3743 or visit the Web site www.grandtraversechorus.org.
The Choral-Aires, made up of 16 Central High School students, also will deliver songs on Friday and Saturday within 15 miles of downtown Traverse City. The students' musical arsenal includes "Kiss the Girl," "In My Life," "In the Still of the Night," "My Funny Valentine," and, yes, the ubiquitous "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." Students love the valentine excursions, said choral director Tamara Grove.
"It's probably one of their favorite times of year," she said.
A $50 Choral-Aires valentine includes two songs, a truffle, card and flower. For $10, a video link can be e-mailed to your someone special that shows the full ensemble singing two songs. Call (231) 590-1075 to reserve a valentine.
