Local Boy Scouts achieve Eagle rank

The following local Boys Scouts recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout with the Scenic Trails Boy Scouts of America. (The biographies below are expanded from the print version of this story.)

Sean Sliwinski, son of Linda and David Sliwinski of Traverse City, is a senior at Traverse City St. Francis High School. He is a member of Traverse City St. Francis Boy Scout Troop 31. He earned 24 merit badges and held many leadership positions including assistant senior patrol leader. He participated in four high adventure trips going to the Northern Tier in Atikokan, Ontario, Sea Base, Florida, Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., and Isle Royale, and earning the "triple crown award." He was elected to the Order of the Arrow and worked on camp staff at Camp Greilick for several years. After graduation, he plans to study audio production and sound design at Michigan Technological University.

Michael Rozycki, son of Sally and Kent Rozycki of Traverse City, is a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School. He is a member of Traverse City St. Francis Boy Scout Troop 31. He is active in the school concert and marching bands and has earned 21 merit badges. He has held many leadership positions including senior patrol leader and was elected to the Order of the Arrow. He went on a high adventure to Isle Royale with Troop 31. He plans on attending Johnson and Wales University to study culinary arts and business.

Curtis Walters, son of Elizabeth Holmgren and Dan Walters of Traverse City, is a senior at Traverse City St. Francis High School. He is a member of Traverse City St. Francis Boy Scout Troop 31. He played football for three years and earned 21 merit badges. He has participated in high adventures, going to Sea Base, Florida and Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. He is currently a senior patrol leader and has been elected to the Order of the Arrow. After graduation, he plans to study fire science at Lake Superior State University.

Joel Lints, son of Mary and Dr. Ron Lints of Traverse City, is a junior at Traverse City St. Francis High School. He is a member of Traverse City St. Francis Boy Scout Troop 31. He plays varsity baseball and football and participated in the division 7 state championship football game in 2007. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has trained to be a Karios Leader for a religious retreat during his senior year. He has worked with children in the first, third and sixth grades through the TBA teachers academy program. He has earned 22 merit badges and has held several leadership positions including troop guide. After graduation, he is considering studying dentistry at the University of Michigan.

Caleb Robinson, son of Jim and Rita Robinson of Traverse City, is a sophomore at Traverse City Christian School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 30. He plays drums for the school worship team and church ministries and also plays soccer. In January, he participated in a school mission trip to New Orleans. He attends East Bay Calvary Church where he helps with Children's Church.

Robinson has served as an assistant patrol leader with the troop and a den chief for Pack 115 and Pack 25. He earned 21 merit badges and the Gerald R. Ford medal. In the summer of 2007, he went on a high adventure with Troop 30, canoeing the Missisaga River in Ontario, Canada, where he served as the youth team leader. His Eagle Scout project included repair of the boardwalk and erosion control on the Beaverhead Trailhead of the Natural Education Reserve along the Boardman River.

Colin Ford, son of David and Tressa Ford of Traverse City, is a junior at Traverse City Central High School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 30. He started his scouting career as a Tiger Cub at Trinity Lutheran School where he received his Arrow of Light. He has been selected to participate in the junior leadership training program and was elected to a number of troop leadership positions including patrol leader, chaplin's aid, OA representative and senior patrol leader. He has earned 27 merit badges as well as BSA lifeguard certification. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.

Ford participated in high adventures at Sea Base, Florida where he camped on a remote barrier island for a week of snorkeling and fishing. In 2007 he canoed 70 miles on remote rivers in Ontario.

For his Eagle Scout project, in consultation with the Grand Traverse Soil and Conservation District, he was involved in the planning, layout, preparation and completion of a new trail extension at Silver Lake Park in Garfield Township. The project required more than 210 man hours to complete.

Trevor Kirt, son of Michael and Linda Kirt, is a junior at Traverse City West Senior High School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 30. He is a member of the National Honor Society and plays bassoon in the symphony band.

He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and jointed Troop 30 in 2000. He has served in several leadership positions including patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and troop historian. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and has served on staff at Camp Greilick for four years teaching science and nature merit badges. He attended a high adventure trip to Florida Seabase.

For his Eagle Scout project, he managed the construction of a fence and arbor at the Charles Olsen Homestead in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Under the guidance of the board members at Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, the fence and arbor had to be historically accurate and were designed and built based on pictures of the original homestead. After graduation, Kirt plans to attend the University of Michigan.
