EMPIRE ---- Friends of Libby Brydges will remember her fondly while playing a round of golf in her honor Friday.
The Dunes Women's Golf League will host the Libby Brydges Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of their fellow golfer, who died in December. Brydges, 87, died of carbon monoxide poisoning at her home in Cedar.
"She played with the golf league forever, she was always there," said Jon Townsend, golf pro at the Dunes Golf Course where the tournament will be held.
The tournament, a two-person scramble with shotgun start, begins at 1 p.m. with a cookout to follow. The cost is $60 per person or $15 for the cookout only. Proceeds will benefit the Leelanau Conservancy in Brydges' honor.
"Libby had so many friends. We're expecting a lot of people to enjoy the day in her honor," said Hattie Townsend, who is chairing the event.
In addition to her presence on the golf course, Brydges was an active member of her community. She was known as an artist, seamstress, gourmet cook and as "Tulip" the clown.
"Tulip" -- a graduate of a three-month clown course in the '90s that included juggling, mime, making balloon sculptures, face painting and ventriloquism -- enjoyed performing at local fairs and picnics.
Brydges, who retired to the Leelanau area in 1971, served as president of the Glen Lake Women's Club, chairman of the "treasures and trivia" booth at an area art fair and until two years ago, operated a bed and breakfast on Limerick Hill.
