District library plans October events
traverse city -- October events at the Traverse Area District Library get under way Oct. 8 with a Live! @ the Library program featuring local author Richard Fidler.
Fidler will present his new book, "Glimpses of Grand Traverse Past," at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room.
Live! @ the Library on Oct. 23 will feature Pat Batta presenting her new mystery, "What Did You Do Before Dying?" at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.
The Wigglers' Fun! program for youngsters will be held at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Oct. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23. A Wigglers' Halloween Parade is set for 10 a.m Oct. 31.
Saturday Sampler Storytime will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 4.
Heritage Days in Alden this weekend
alden -- Alden Heritage Days featuring crafters and artisans will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in several shops in Alden.
Sprigs and Sprouts will hold an apple and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alden United Methodist Church. The Mrs. Smith's Pumpkin Patch award ceremony for decorated pumpkins will be held from noon to 2 p.m.
Civil War generals are subject of talk
old mission -- The Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society will host Larry Bensley of Omena, who will speak about Civil War generals.
The program begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Peninsula Township Hall, 13235 Center Road.

Historical walking tours continue
traverse city -- The historical walking tours presented by the Grand Traverse Heritage Center have been extended through Oct. 18.
The tours depart from the Heritage Center, 322 Sixth Street in Traverse City, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays. Guides are volunteers Carol Hale and Fred Hoisington of Traverse City.
Among destinations on the two-hour tour are the historic homes and buildings on Sixth Street, Front Street, Wellington Street and State Street.
Reservation is required. Tickets are $10 per person. Call 995-0313.
Tour showcases Benzonia buildings
benzonia -- In celebration of Benzonia's 150th birthday, the Benzie Area Historical Society is offering guided walking tours to view some of Benzonia's historic buildings Saturday, during the Benzie County Fall Fest.
Tours will be offered at noon and 2 p.m. starting at the Benzie Area Historical Museum. The tour will last about 11/2 hours. A few buildings will be open for the tour. There is no charge for the tours but donations are welcome to benefit the work of the Society and the upkeep of the Benzie Area Historical Museum.
Other activities planned for the weekend festival include a soup contest, cider press, sidewalk art contest, craft projects for children, a petting zoo and face painting, and "the Great Pumpkin Hunt" where clues are collected throughout Beulah and Benzonia and winners get a prize for the correct number of answers to the hunt.

Traverse City -- Traverse Area Republican Women will meet Thursday at Black Star Farms at the Grand Traverse Commons.

Potluck for Torch Lake neighbors
eastport -- The Upper Torch Lake Association will hold its monthly community potluck dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Monday at the Torch Lake Township Community Hall on U.S. 31 south of Torch Lake Village.
Area residents are invited to bring a beverage, table service and a dish to share.
Beginning in November, the potluck will be held on the second Monday of every month.
