Maritime academy holds memorial service

TRAVERSE CITY The community is invited to attend the 34th annual Mariners Memorial Service at noon Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the courtyard of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at NMC's Great Lakes Campus.

The memorial service is held to honor mariners who have perished on the Great Lakes and oceans and is sponsored by the Student Propeller Club, Port 150, of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.

This year's speakers include Cadet Daniel Heck and RADM John Tanner. The national anthem and the Mariner's Hymn will be sung by the Traverse City St. Francis high school choir. Reverend Iakovos Olechnowicz of the Greek Orthodox Mission of Traverse City will give the invocation.

The Great Lakes Campus is located at 715 E. Front St., at Barlow Avenue (next to the Holiday Inn) in Traverse City. Guests are invited to enter through the glass exhibition hall and proceed into the outdoor courtyard on the north side of the Academy.

Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, call the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at 995-1200.

'SPIN for STEP' event benefits TCAPS program

TRAVERSE CITY Phi Alpha Theta Eta, in partnership with Fitness Factor, will hold its second annual "SPIN for STEP" fundraiser on Saturday. Monies raised from the "SPIN for STEP" fundraiser will benefit Traverse City Area Public Schools' Students in Transition Empowerment Program (STEP).

STEP is a free program offered by Traverse City Area Public Schools that provides education-related services to eligible students who have lost permanent housing due to foreclosure, eviction, or reasons related to economic hardship.

Fitness Factor will offer spinning classes from 8 to 9 a.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. The cost for each class is $10. A membership is not required.

"SPIN for STEP" is being held in advance of Homeless Awareness Week, Nov. 15 21. For more information, e-mail Abby Jordan at jordanab@tcaps.net.

Thanksgiving meal at senior center

GRAYLING The public is invited to Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 19 at the Grayling Senior Center, 308 Lawndale.

The meal will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. No reservations are required. The suggested donation is $2.50 for ages 60 and older and $4.75 for ages 59 and younger. A salad bar is available for an additional $2.25.

Friendly Garden Club to meet

TRAVERSE CITY The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City will meet 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the TBA Conference Center. Hans VanSumeren, master gardener and director of Great Lakes Water Studies at Northwestern Michigan College will present a program, "Making a Commitment to Saving our Waterways through Study and Action."

Film rethinks Afghanistan

TRAVERSE CITY MidEast: JustPeace will host a dinner and movie screening of Robert Greenwald's film "Rethink Afghanistan" beginning with dinner at 6 p.m., Wednesday, at the Warehouse Lounge behind Right Brain Brewery, 221 Garland St.

Plan to buy your own dinner and/or attend the free movie, beginning at 7 p.m.

Free computer classes offered

BEULAH Everyone is welcome to attend two free computer classes offered at The Darcy Library, 7238 Commercial St. Bring you own laptop or use one of the library's limited number of computers.

Class one, Beginning Computer Skills, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5.

Class two, The Michigan Electronic Library, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12. Attendees will learn how to access thousands of free books and magazines at home on their computer, in addition to job training, student materials, and much more.

Series focuses on social justice

TRAVERSE CITY Speakers on social justice and the developing world will talk at Northwestern Michigan College in a three-part Global Awareness series in this month.

All presentations are free and open to the public.

At noon Thursday, Angele Khasho Larson will speak on "Living in Jerusalem: Beyond the Visible and Invisible Walls." The talk begins at noon at Milliken Auditorium.

The Nov. 17 program is by Chris Treter, co-founder of Higher Grounds Coffee, talking about social justice and environmental sustainability in the world of coffee. That talk begins at 7 p.m. at the Dennos Museum Center's Janis Room.

Gary Howe, a photojournalist and geography instructor at NMC, will give a travelogue about "Street Culture in China" at 7 p.m. Nov. 24.

Senior breakfast includes D-Day talk

NORTHPORT Northport Highlands, a retirement community, is hosting a breakfast for seniors Nov. 11.

The free event includes a hot meal, recognition and a talk by Richard Grout, of Suttons Bay, about his D-Day experience.

Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m.; the presentation begins at 8:30 a.m. Northport Highlands is at 215 S. High St. For more information, call 386-9900.

Fishtown topic of next meeting

ELK RAPIDS The Elk Rapids Historical Society's program Nov. 12 will be about the preservation of Fishtown.

Amanda Holmes, administrative director of the Fishtown Preservation Society, will talk about the group's efforts, its recently completed Fishtown Site Study, Design and Master Plan and the future of Fishtown.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Township Hall, 401 River St., across from the tennis courts.

Talks about Medicaid, Medicare are set

TRAVERSE CITY Fred Goldenberg of Senior Benefit Solutions will talk about changes in Medicare and Medicaid at the Village at Bay Ridge Tuesday.

The talk begins at 1 p.m. in the Village at Bay Ridge-West dining room, 3950 Scenic Ridge, off Silver Lake Road near Copper Ridge.

Also on Tuesday, Jim McDonnell from Ford Insurance will review Medicare and talk about Medicare Advantage plans, prescription drug plans and Medigap plans.

McDonnell will talk in the Village at Bay Ridge East dining room at 11 a.m., 3850 Scenic Ridge.
