TRAVERSE CITY -- Tired, hungry, with no place to call home -- where would you turn?

In observance of National Homeless Awareness Week, Nov. 15-21, Third Level Crisis Intervention Center will host a scavenger hunt to benefit the Homeless Youth Initiative and educate community members about options available to homeless youth in Traverse City.

"We want to create a feeling of the struggles that homeless youth have to go through," said Sandy Piotrowski, Third Level's development coordinator.

"Where would you go if you wanted to do your laundry or take a shower? There are resources available, but getting the information to the people in need is a challenge," Piotrowski said.

Clues for the scavenger hunt, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, beginning and ending at Studio 7, 225 14th St., will lead participants to answer questions that homeless youth face on a daily basis.

Teams of four to six people will be provided with a list of items they need to locate, with each item having a point value. The team with the most points earned at the end of the hunt will receive a prize. A prize will also be presented to the individual who raises the most dollars for the Homeless Youth Initiative.

The scavenger hunt will be held outdoors and teams will have the option to participate on foot, bike or in their car. Anyone is welcome to participate whether they come with their own team or as an individual to be included in another team.

"We want this to be educational, but fun at the same time, and of course to raise money," said Piotrowski, noting that some 250 homeless youth in Traverse City Area Public Schools receive help from the Homeless Youth Initiative.

Registration for the scavenger hunt will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. at Studio 7. The cost is $100 for a team of four to six or $25 per individual. Lunch will be served and awards presented following the race from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the scavenger hunt will go to the Homeless Youth Initiative collaborating partners including Third Level Crisis Intervention Center Inc., TCAPS' STEP (Students in Transition Empowerment Program), Child and Family Services' Elements Program, Catholic Human Services' Host Homes for Homeless Youth, Women's Resource Center and the Goodwill Inn.
