Students of the Month: 05/19/2009
The following have been named Students of the Month by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City.
-- Brittan James DeYoung, a senior at Grand Traverse Academy, is the son of Keith and Dianna DeYoung. He served as a year-round volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, and participated in track and school dances. He has twice been named Student of the Month, achieved honor roll all four years of high school, and received a Gold employment ready certificate from the Career-Tech Center. Brittan enjoys working with computers, biking and swimming. He plans to attend Northwestern Michigan College, then transfer to a technical school, studying computer science.
-- Tyler Ramsby, a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School, is the son of Henry and Lonna Ramsby. A member of National Honor Society, he has participated in junior varsity tennis and orchestra. He submitted a documentary for National History Day in Washington, D.C., and created a PSA against prescription drug abuse. In addition, he created a film for the school's Sunset Film Festival. A National Honor Student, Tyler was also named a two-time Golden Guard for life guarding at Great Wolf Lodge. He enjoys making films, playing tennis and video games, and exploring northern Michigan by car. He plans to attend aviation school at Northwestern Michigan College, then transfer to a university to study Business. He plans a career as a commercial pilot.
-- Amanda "Mandy" Scott, a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School, is the daughter of Phil Scott and Nancy Parsons. She has served as Project Leader of Students for World Awareness and captain of the varsity track team. In addition, she has participated in cross country, musicals, AP classes, and a book club. Mandy has received LSA's Departmental Scholarship from University of Michigan, Cherryland Co-Op Scholarship, is a member of the honor roll and hold three varsity letters.
She enjoys running, reading, snowboarding, kayaking, camping, traveling and Spanish. Mandy plans to attend Honors College at U-M, then to study medicine (stem cell research or psychiatry) in graduate school. She hopes to join the Peace Corps and/or Doctors Without Borders.
