Eastern donates gloves to Goodwill
Eastern Elementary School staff, students, and families worked together to help the community during the winter months by donating 200 pairs of mittens/gloves to the Goodwill Inn. The school community also donated many items for the Father Fred Frost Bite Marathon, which took place February 1-10. In total, the Father Fred Foundation received 1,184 donations from the community.
Eastern Elementary holds silent auction
Eastern Elementary School will hold their ninth annual Silent/Live Auction from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, March 14 at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Conference Center, 715 E. Front Street.
The silent auction offers many items including family vacations to Washington D.C., Chicago, and Grand Rapids; the opportunity to be an honorary coach at a Michigan State University Women's Basketball Game with Head Coach, and Traverse City native, Suzy Merchant; a Hannah Montana cardboard cut-out; Detroit Tigers game tickets; as well as restaurant and spa certificates, children's books, and more.
Funds raised from the event will help support Eastern Elementary School's Spanish Language Program, which is fully funded by the school's PTO.
Tickets are $35 or two for $60 and include entrance into the event and an hors d'oeuvres reception. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling Jill Jenkins at 929-9176 or jill.Jenkins@charter.net or Heather Asiala at 947-2565 or hsasiala@charter.net.
Long Lake hosts Scrap-A-Thon
Long Lake Elementary School will host a Scrap-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, March 15, in the school's cafeteria. The cost for this 12-hour Scrap-A-Thon is $30, which includes lunch and dinner, snacks, beverages, demonstrations and prizes.
Scrapbookers are encouraged to bring their own supplies, however, supplies will be available for purchase.
To register, call Kelly Stockfisch at 275-0660 or e-mail Kelly125@centurytel.net. Bring a friend who is not from Long Lake Elementary School or Norris Elementary School and receive $5 off your registration fee. Registration deadline is March 7. Space is limited.
Proceeds from the Scrap-A-Thon will be used by the Long Lake Elementary PTO to enhance student learning through programs, field trips, etc.
Nature deprivation subject of class
Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder will be the instructor for a two-session class hosted by Northwestern Michigan College's Extended Educational Services division from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., March 6 and 13. Local psychologist Dr. Lisa Franseen will explore why we need nature, current trends, implications of deprivation and how this process might be reversed.
