TC Kiwanis select Feb. students of month

The Kiwanis Club of Traverse City has named their students of the month.

-- Amanda Wheatley, a senior at St. Francis High School and the Career Tech Center, is the daughter of Tim and Lisa Wheatley.

Wheatley is a member of the student council, US First and an honor roll student. She has participated in school musicals as well as track, choir and band. She studies manufacturing technology at the Career Tech Center.

After graduation, Wheatley would like to attend Michigan Tech to pursue studies in medicine. She also plans to stay active in music and theater.

-- Robert Marsh, son of Jamie and Barbara Marsh, is a senior at Traverse City St. Francis High School.

Marsh is vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the student council. He has performed in school musicals and is a member of the marching band. He has earned the wind ensemble outstanding section award and was drum major and section leader. He was the senior Homecoming king and has earned multiple academic awards. He is a member of the Traverse City Children's Theatre and the Old Town Playhouse.

After graduation, Marsh plans to combine a love for theatre with a focus in marketing and broadcasting.

-- Alexa Bach, daughter of Rob and Lauri Bach, is a senior at Kingsley High School.

Bach is a member of the student council, volunteer club and 4-H. She has been involved in softball, the equestrian team and the mentor program as well as People to People, the Outdoor Adventure Club and National Honor Society.

After graduation, Bach plans to study biology and chemistry in hopes of eventually becoming a veterinarian.

-- Sam Meachum, son of David and Kim Meachum, is a senior at Traverse City Christian School.

Meachum participates in soccer, basketball and track and is a member of the National Honor Society, National Honor Roll and the National Mathematics Society.

After graduation, Meachum will attend Grand Valley State University and plans to major in international business with a minor in middle eastern studies. He plans to pursue a career in federal law enforcement.

-- Eric VanDrie, a senior at Traverse City Christian School, is the son of Kevin and Sharon VanDrie.

VanDrie is an Eagle Boy Scout and a member of the varsity soccer and track teams earning an all region honorable mention in soccer. He volunteers for a community meals program and enjoys hunting, camping and paint ball.

After graduation, VanDrie is planning on attending Michigan Tech University to study mechanical engineering.

-- Emily Lelandais, daughter of Bryn Lynch Lelandais, is a senior at Traverse City Central High School.

Lelandais is co-president of the Spanish club, bulletin editor for the Key Club and a Model UN delegate. She played varsity tennis for three years and is a volunteer for Kids Against Hunger, the Salvation Army Christmas party and the Traverse City Film Festival. She has earned the NMTA sportsmanship award and the "Bob" tennis scholarship.

After graduation, Lelandais hopes to attend Georgetown University or American University to study international relations or international politics.

-- Dan Gleason, a senior studying power equipment technology at the Career Tech Center and Leland Public School, is the son of Al Gleason and Karen Hall.

Gleason participates in Skills USA earning first place in the region for power equipment technology and will compete at the state level next month. He has been named to the TBA-CTC principal's honor roll.

After graduation, Gleason plans to attend Lincoln Tech to study automotive and high performance mechanics. He hopes to one day own his own mechanics business.

-- John Zarafonitis, son of Frank and Kathy Zarafonitis, is a senior at Traverse City Central High School.

Zarafonitis is a member of the National Honor Society and has volunteered at Goodwill Inn fundraisers, Michigan Community Blood Centers and various charities. He has earned the President's Education Award and high honors for academic achievement.

After graduation, Zarafonitis plans to study graphic engineering and design with hopes of becoming a rollercoaster designer.
