Breakers second at Harbor Springs

Led by Hayley Shugart and Chris Shumate, the Traverse City Breakers swam to a second place finish in a quad meet at Harbor Springs recently.

The Breakers hooked up with the host Hammerheads team, along with the Kalkaska Cruisers and Charlevoix Stingrays, for the Saturday afternoon meet. All four teams are members of the Michigan Team Swim League (MTSL), an organization that promotes team competition in mid- and northern Michigan.

Shumate, 10, qualified for the season-ending MTSL state meet in three events. Shumate finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:27.18), fourth in the 50 freestyle (37.30) and fourth in the 50 backstroke (46.60).

Shugart, 16, won the 200 individual medley (2:44.64) in the girls 15-18 group. Her time was a personal best and surpassed the MTSL state meet standards. Shugart, a student at Elk Rapids High School, touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle (6:31.71) and added a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke while notching an MTSL state cut (1:23.19).

Jenna Ashley starred in the girls 9-10 division. Ashley, 10, qualified for the USA Swimming state meet in the 50 freestyle (31.04) and 100 freestyle (1:09.33) events. Ashley won the 50 freestyle and was runner up to teammate Julia Brunner (1:09.28) in the 100 freestyle. Brunner scored a first-time USA-S state cut in the 200 individual medley (2:52.51) during the meet.

In the girls 11-12 division, Sierra Fraser led an impressive group of Breakers swimmers in the 50 freestyle. Fraser (34.53) finished sixth, followed closely by Rachael Creamer (35.22), Emma Simon (35.67) and Bryn Davis (35.86) in seventh through ninth place. Jamie Boerema contributed to Traverse City's point totals with her fourth place finish in the 100 freestyle (1:27.48), while Allie Shumate raced to a fifth place finish (1:32.21) in that same event.

Boerema, 11, won the 200 freestyle (3:12.66) in the 11-12 group. The meet was Boerema's first. Davis, 11, rang up a fourth place finish in the 50 butterfly (41.03). Teammate Emily Huhman swam a personal best time (42.91) while placing sixth in that event. Huhman added a third in the 50 backstroke (40.65), and Creamer did the same in the 50 breaststroke (42.83).

In the boys 8 and under division, Traverse City's Kyle Skarshaug roared to victory in the 100 individual medley (2:02.00). Skarshaug touched the wall second in the 25 butterfly (24.33) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (47.44) later in the meet.

Patrick Byrne, 8, scored for the Breakers in the 25 backstroke (third, 27.06) and 25 freestyle (fourth, 27.34).

On the girls' side of that group, 7-year-old Morgan Myers qualified for the MTSL state meet by placing third in the 25 freestyle (25.37). Sister Kristin Myers, 8, was runner up in the 50 freestyle (47.55) and fourth in the 25 freestyle (22.57).

Emerson Holmes won the 25 butterfly (30.68) in the girls 8 and under group. She added a fifth place finish in the 25 freestyle (22.58).

In the 25 backstroke, Traverse City's Mia Shaffer (29.11), Olivia Hale (29.32), Ava Shaffer (29.89) and Ella Meloche (35.74) swam well. Meloche's time in the 25 freestyle (26.74) was a personal best, as was Ava Shaffer's (29.03).

Swimming in the girls 9-10 division, Natalia Chela (3:13.49) and Irma Howard (3:25.26) went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle. Maya Breneman's performance in the 50 backstroke (51.65) was her best ever by almost 13 seconds. Tess Mello swam a strong race in the 50 freestyle (1:02.01).

In the girls 13-14 group, Becky Stanwick was the class of the field in the 200 individual medley (3:13.26). Teammate Katlyn Myers, 13, very likely slept well after her efforts in the 500 freestyle (first, 6:56.10), 200 freestyle (third, 2:31.75) and 100 breaststroke (fourth, 1:44.07).

Alaina Chela, 13, captured all three of her individual races the 200 freestyle (2:31.52), 100 backstroke (1:10.21) and 100 butterfly (1:06.44).

The Breakers return to action at the Rockford Fall Fiesta meet this weekend.
